VA Aid and Attendance is a monthly add-on to a qualifying veteran's or survivor's existing VA pension. To get it, the VA requires that the applicant already be receiving a VA pension and meet at least one additional condition — needing help with daily activities, being bedridden, living in a nursing home because of a qualifying disability, or meeting a specific visual-impairment standard.
One rule worth knowing up front: Aid and Attendance and Housebound benefits can't be received at the same time — it's one or the other. A nursing-home applicant needs to submit VA Form 21-0779, and the broader claim process typically also calls for VA Form 21-2680, which captures the medical examination information the VA needs to evaluate the claim.
