VA Aid and Attendance adds a monthly amount on top of a qualifying veteran's or survivor's existing VA pension. The VA extends this benefit when another person is needed to help with activities like bathing, feeding, or dressing; when the veteran is bedridden; when a disability-related mental or physical decline has led to a nursing-home stay; or when specific visual-impairment criteria are met.
One distinction worth knowing: Aid and Attendance is not the same benefit as Housebound allowance, and the VA does not allow someone to receive both at the same time. For a nursing-home applicant, VA Form 21-0779 is used specifically to provide nursing-home information as part of the claim.
Beyond this federal benefit, New Hampshire veterans have access to one State Veterans Home and locally adopted property-tax credits, both worth factoring into a broader care plan.
