VA Aid and Attendance is a federal pension add-on for qualifying veterans and survivors, and the Department of Veterans Affairs recognizes several paths to eligibility: needing help with everyday activities like bathing, feeding, or dressing; being bedridden; living in a nursing home because of a disability-related loss of ability; or meeting a specific severe visual-impairment standard.
An applicant claiming this benefit from within a nursing home also has to submit VA Form 21-0779, the Request for Nursing Home Information in Connection with Claim for Aid and Attendance. It's worth remembering that VA approval doesn't decide anything about Arkansas Medicaid eligibility — the two programs run on entirely separate rules. Notably, Arkansas excludes VA Aid and Attendance from its LTSS income calculation, the state operates two State Veterans Homes, and it provides tax relief for qualified disabled veterans.
