ALTCS isn't limited to nursing-facility care — AHCCCS explicitly allows services to be delivered in an institution or in a home and community-based setting, and many members actually live at home or in assisted living while receiving the in-home services they need. That flexibility makes ALTCS the first program to look at whenever someone needs ongoing paid help but wants to stay out of a nursing facility.
AHCCCS describes its direct-care services as attendant care, personal care, and homemaker help for members who need assistance to remain safely in their own homes. To match services to needs, the program uses the Home and Community Based Services Needs Tool, a standardized assessment that evaluates functional and support needs — including activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living — for members who might benefit from specific HCBS.
