Aid and Attendance, along with the related Housebound benefit, adds a monthly payment on top of a qualifying veteran's or survivor's VA pension. The VA looks at factors such as needing assistance with daily activities, being bedridden, being a nursing-home resident due to a disability, or having a qualifying visual impairment — this is a federal VA benefit, entirely distinct from Alabama Medicaid.
A veteran can pursue both VA benefits and Alabama Medicaid at once, but the two programs run on completely separate eligibility systems. There isn't a clearly published Alabama Medicaid policy explaining exactly how every component of Aid and Attendance factors into every eligibility and patient-liability calculation, so families shouldn't assume a benefit is either automatically excluded or automatically counted. The safer path is requesting a written calculation directly from the Agency and working alongside an accredited veterans representative or a county veterans service office.
