VA Aid and Attendance isn't a Montana Medicaid program — it's a federal benefit layered on top of an existing VA pension. The VA pays it as a monthly addition to a qualifying veteran's or survivor's pension, and a person can't collect both Aid and Attendance and Housebound benefits at the same time.
To qualify, a pension recipient generally needs help from another person for daily activities like bathing, feeding, or dressing; is substantially bedridden; is in a nursing home because of a disability-related loss of mental or physical function; or meets the VA's specific visual-impairment standard.
Applying involves paperwork: a nursing-home applicant completes VA Form 21-0779 along with the standard Aid and Attendance materials, and for mailed applications, a medical examiner fills out the exam section of VA Form 21-2680.
Montana veterans also have access to three State Veterans Homes — in Columbia Falls, Butte, and Glendive — as an institutional option outside the standard Medicaid nursing-facility network.
