Aid and Attendance is a monthly add-on to a veteran's or survivor's VA pension, not a separate stand-alone benefit. The VA lists several paths to qualifying: needing regular help with activities like bathing, feeding, or dressing; being bedridden; needing nursing-home care because of a disability-related loss of ability; or meeting specific severe visual-impairment criteria.
A veteran applying from a nursing home also has to submit VA Form 21-0779. It's worth remembering that Aid and Attendance and Louisiana Medicaid are entirely separate programs with their own rules — an approval, denial, or award amount from one doesn't determine the outcome under the other.
Louisiana adds its own layer on top of the federal benefit: the state operates five State Veterans Homes and offers property-tax relief for qualifying veterans, both of which can factor into a family's overall care and funding strategy alongside Aid and Attendance.
