Illinois nursing-facility residents on Medicaid generally have to contribute their income toward the cost of care, after allowed deductions — this shows up as either patient liability or patient credit depending on the situation.

The Illinois Department on Aging lays out the deduction order clearly: first the personal-needs allowance, then an eligible allowance for a community spouse, then certain health-insurance premiums such as Medicare Part B — whatever's left over is owed to the facility as patient liability.
