Maryland's appendix schedules currently set the medically needy non-MAGI resource standard at $2,500 for a single applicant and $3,000 for a couple. But a married applicant shouldn't stop reading at the two-person figure — the same appendix carries separate spousal-impoverishment protections meant to shield the at-home spouse's resources from being swept into the case.
What actually counts as a "resource" is its own question. Maryland's resource manual defines it as accumulated, available personal wealth the person actually has a legal right to sell, transfer, or cash in. In other words, whose name is on an account or deed matters less than whether that person genuinely controls and can access it — a distinction that trips up families who assume ownership on paper settles the matter.
