# Wisconsin Nursing Home Medicaid

Last updated 2026-10-20

Wisconsin's Institutional Medicaid pathway defines an institutionalized person as someone who has lived in a medical institution for 30 consecutive days, someone expected to remain that long, or a Community Waivers participant. Skilled nursing facilities and intermediate-care facilities both fall within the handbook's definition of medical institution, subject to the program's other conditions.

Financial approval doesn't mean every dollar of income disappears from the equation — Wisconsin calculates a patient-liability amount under its institutional long-term-care rules. Notably, a member already enrolled in Family Care, Family Care Partnership, or PACE who becomes institutionalized switches to paying patient liability instead of a community-waiver cost share, which can catch families off guard if they expected the same cost structure to continue.

Residents in Institutional Medicaid keep a personal-needs allowance of $55 a month from their income before the balance goes toward the cost of their care.
