# West Virginia Medicaid Long-Term Care

Last updated 2026-10-20

West Virginia's long-term-care Medicaid isn't a single program so much as a set of related pathways. The state's public guidance covers people in a Nursing Home Facility, those in an Intermediate Care Facility for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities, and people cared for at home who need the same level of care a nursing-home resident would require. Importantly, both medical and financial requirements have to be satisfied — a diagnosis alone or a thin bank account alone doesn't establish coverage.

The Bureau for Medical Services sets the underlying Medicaid policy, as identified in the state's own estate-recovery manual, and that manual treats nursing-facility care and home- and community-based services as the two core long-term-care categories. For someone applying for home care specifically, financial eligibility gets determined through a Department of Human Services county office or the Social Security Administration, while a nurse completes the separate medical assessment.
