# Vermont Medicaid Asset Limits

Last updated 2026-10-20

For Vermont's Medicaid for the Aged, Blind and Disabled category, DVHA's published eligibility table sets a $2,000 countable-resource limit for a single applicant and $3,000 for a couple, and current 2026 Vermont elder-law guidance confirms that same $2,000 figure for an individual. These numbers are the starting screen — they tell you whether you clear the initial eligibility bar, not necessarily whether every asset you own gets counted against it.

Married couples need a more careful calculation before assuming the household is simply capped at $3,000. Under Vermont's 2026 spousal-impoverishment rules, the spouse who isn't entering care — the community spouse — is generally allowed to keep half of the couple's countable assets as measured at the snapshot date, subject to a floor of $32,532 and a ceiling of $162,660. Meanwhile, the spouse applying for institutional care can retain $2,000 after that allocation is made. Because these figures are indexed and can shift from year to year, checking the live DVHA tables at the time of application — rather than relying on last year's numbers — is a smart habit.
