# Utah VA Aid & Attendance

Last updated 2026-10-20

Aid and Attendance and Housebound benefits are federal VA additions layered on top of a qualifying veteran's or survivor's monthly pension amount. For Aid and Attendance specifically, a pension recipient may qualify if they need help with everyday activities like bathing, feeding, or dressing, are bedridden, are in a nursing home because of a disability-related loss of mental or physical ability, or meet the VA's specific eyesight standard.

This isn't a separate Utah Medicaid program, and it doesn't kick in automatically just because someone enters a facility. The VA is clear that a person can't receive both Aid and Attendance and Housebound benefits simultaneously, and it lays out separate application instructions — including specific nursing-home information requirements for applicants already in a facility. A benefits counselor should coordinate the VA claim alongside the current Utah Medicaid income and patient-liability analysis, rather than assuming a decision in one program settles the other.

Beyond the federal pension itself, Utah maintains four state Veterans Homes for qualifying veterans who need long-term care, plus a disability-based property-tax exemption — both worth reviewing separately from the VA pension claim.
