# Utah Nursing Home Medicaid

Last updated 2026-10-20

Utah's institutional pathway goes by the name Nursing Home Medicaid, and the state's long-term-care page describes it as covering nursing-home costs along with other medical expenses. To qualify for Medicaid coverage inside a nursing facility, an individual has to meet the medical criteria for nursing-home level of care — financial and medical eligibility are both required, with neither one substituting for the other.

That level-of-care determination is a functional and medical judgment, not just a diagnosis or the fact of being admitted to a facility. Utah's New Choices Waiver treats nursing-facility level of care as an ongoing requirement for participants, describing the program as designed for people whose needs can be safely met in an integrated community setting after a period of long-term institutional residence — confirming that the same level-of-care concept applies on both the institutional and waiver sides. The state's available manual sets the nursing-home personal-needs allowance at $45 a month.
