# Utah Medicaid Long-Term Care

Utah's public medical-assistance program is simply called Medicaid, and the Utah Department of Health and Human Services publishes the rules that govern its long-term-care and waiver offerings. The state describes two main routes: paid care in a medical facility such as a nursing home, or services delivered in a person's own home through a home and community-based waiver — with financial and medical eligibility both required before either route opens up.

That two-part screen carries real weight. Passing the financial side of a Medicaid review doesn't establish that someone actually needs nursing-facility-level care, and a genuine care need doesn't resolve any of the income, resource, transfer, trust, or spousal rules on its own. Utah's New Choices Waiver, for instance, requires nursing-facility level of care both at the point of application and continuously throughout participation — and the state's general long-term-care page applies that same medical standard to institutional applicants.
