# Texas Medicaid Asset Limits

Last updated 2026-10-20

Texas keeps its resource limits tight. HHSC's 2026 guidance for nursing-facility and HCBS-waiver Medicaid sets the countable-resource ceiling at $2,000 for a single applicant and $3,000 when both spouses in a couple are applying. These figures cover countable resources specifically — plenty of household property is excluded from the count entirely (HHSC Appendix XII).

Among the exclusions HHSC lists: a Texas homestead, as long as the applicant intends to return to it; one vehicle, regardless of its value; and qualifying burial funds or life insurance up to $1,500 in face value, along with several other carve-outs. Whether a specific home qualifies for exclusion can hinge on facts like whether it's the applicant's principal residence and whether there's a genuine intent to return (HHSC Appendix XII).

## Texas figures

- Individual resource limit: $2,000
- Couple resource limit (both applying): $3,000
- Life insurance/burial fund exclusion: $1,500 face value
