# Ohio VA Aid & Attendance

Veterans and surviving spouses navigating Ohio Medicaid encounter two different treatments of VA Aid & Attendance, depending on which calculation is in play. For the initial Special Income Level eligibility test, Ohio excludes Aid & Attendance from countable income entirely, since the rule adopts federal SSI income exclusions.

The picture changes once someone is already in a nursing facility or HCBS waiver and Ohio calculates patient liability. At that stage, the state excludes VA pension income, including Aid & Attendance, only up to $90 per month for a qualifying veteran or surviving spouse without a dependent minor or disabled child. That's a narrower exclusion tied to the separate post-eligibility calculation, not the broader initial-eligibility exclusion.
