# New Mexico Medicaid Long-Term Care

Last updated 2026-10-20

New Mexico delivers Medicaid through a managed-care program called Turquoise Care, which the state's Health Care Authority says launched on July 1, 2024. Most Medicaid members are enrolled in this managed-care structure, and HCA confirms that its managed-care organizations cover physical health, behavioral health, and long-term services and supports all under one umbrella (New Mexico HCA Turquoise Care overview). CMS tracks this at the federal level as a Section 1115 demonstration — New Mexico Turquoise Care, the successor to the earlier Centennial Care 2.0 — with approval running through December 31, 2029 (CMS New Mexico Turquoise Care demonstration page).

For someone who actually needs a nursing facility, the relevant financial pathway is generally Institutional Care Medicaid rather than ordinary Medicaid categories. HCA's January 2026 eligibility information names three specific categories for this route: 081 for aged applicants, 083 for blind applicants, and 084 for disabled applicants, covering people who need care in high or low nursing facilities, ICF/IID facilities, or acute-care hospitals (HCA January 2026 eligibility pamphlet).

This distinction matters in practice because Institutional Care Medicaid runs on its own set of income, resource, transfer, and patient-pay rules — rules that differ meaningfully from the standards applied to other Medicaid categories in the state.
