# New Jersey Medicaid Asset Limits

Last updated 2026-10-20

New Jersey's 2026 MLTSS application guidance sets the resource ceiling at $2,000 or less for a single applicant. Two things specifically don't count toward that number: the house the person lives in and the vehicle they use, though the home is still subject to the state's separate equity rules (2026 MLTSS application guidance).

DMAHS's 2026 income-and-resource chart backs that up, listing $2,000 for an individual under the ordinary Medicaid cap and $3,000 for a two-person Medicaid-only household — and separately, a $2,982-a-month income cap specific to the MLTSS/institutional category. That distinction matters: families shouldn't substitute an everyday community Medicaid figure for the long-term-services number (DMAHS 2026 income standards).

On home equity, New Jersey sits at the generous end of what federal rules allow — the same DMAHS chart lists a $1,130,000 maximum home-equity limit for 2026. A home can be excluded from countable resources in the right circumstances, but that's a separate question from what happens with estate recovery down the line (DMAHS 2026 income standards; DMAHS estate-recovery guide).
