# Mississippi VA Aid & Attendance

Last updated 2026-10-20

Aid and Attendance and the related Housebound benefit are federal VA pension add-ons — monthly payments layered on top of a qualifying veteran's or survivor's existing VA pension. The VA says these benefits may be available to a pension recipient who needs help with daily activities, is bedridden, is a nursing-home patient due to a disability, or meets a qualifying visual-impairment standard. None of this is a Mississippi Medicaid benefit; it runs entirely on the federal VA's own track (VA Aid and Attendance and Housebound benefits).

Mississippi's DOM connects to this federal benefit in a specific way: long-term-care applicants are required to apply for and accept any benefits they may be entitled to, and VA benefits are named explicitly. Notably, DOM's 2026 nursing-facility guide sets a $90 personal-needs allowance — higher than the usual $44 nursing-facility PNA — specifically for veterans and surviving spouses who receive a $90 VA pension (DOM 2026 nursing-facility and HCBS guide).

Beyond that specific allowance, the located DOM materials don't spell out a complete, line-by-line rule for how every dollar of an Aid and Attendance payment enters each eligibility and patient-liability calculation. Veterans and survivors pursuing both programs at once should get a written DOM calculation and work with an accredited veterans representative rather than assume a VA award is automatically excluded or automatically available for a given expense. Mississippi currently operates five State Veterans Homes and offers homestead relief that can factor into a broader plan.
