# Mississippi Medicaid Long-Term Care

Last updated 2026-10-20

Long-term-care coverage in Mississippi runs through the Mississippi Division of Medicaid, generally referred to as DOM. Unlike states that give their long-term-care Medicaid program a distinct brand name, DOM's 2026 eligibility guide simply treats it as coverage for aged, blind, or disabled individuals who live in a nursing facility or take part in a Home and Community Based Services waiver — it's Medicaid itself, not a separately branded plan (DOM 2026 nursing-facility and HCBS guide).

Qualifying starts with demonstrating an actual need for long-term care, not just financial eligibility. DOM treats someone in a nursing home or hospital as needing long-term care once the stay is expected to last 31 consecutive days or more; for someone applying through an HCBS waiver, the expectation is a similar 31-day-or-longer need for waiver services. An attending physician has to certify that the placement is medically necessary before any of this moves forward (DOM nursing-home and HCBS eligibility page).

Beyond the medical piece, DOM's current consumer guide requires Mississippi residency, a qualifying citizenship or immigration status, and being age 65 or older, blind, or disabled. One detail families often overlook: the guide requires applicants to seek and accept any benefits they may be entitled to, specifically naming VA, retirement, and disability benefits — a duty that matters a great deal when assembling the income picture for a Medicaid application (DOM 2026 nursing-facility and HCBS guide).
