# Minnesota VA Aid & Attendance

Last updated 2026-10-20

Aid and Attendance is a federal benefit layered on top of a qualifying VA pension, paid monthly to eligible veterans and survivors. The VA looks for situations such as needing help with daily activities, being bedridden, residing in a nursing home due to a disability-related need, or having a specified visual impairment; a nursing-home-based claim additionally requires VA Form 21-0779.

It's worth being clear that VA eligibility and Minnesota MA eligibility are entirely separate determinations — qualifying for one says nothing about qualifying for the other. That said, Minnesota's institutional-income statute does build in a specific accommodation: for a veteran without a spouse or child, or a surviving spouse of a veteran without a child, the state deducts whichever is higher — the standard MA personal-needs allowance or the VA improved-pension amount — first, in the institutional income calculation.

Minnesota also operates eight state Veterans Homes and offers a disabled-veteran homestead exclusion, additional resources worth factoring into a veteran family's broader funding picture.
