# Minnesota Nursing Home Medicaid

Last updated 2026-10-20

Medical Assistance can cover nursing-home costs for someone who both needs a nursing-home level of care and meets the program's financial rules — provided they haven't triggered a transfer penalty from an uncompensated asset transfer. Once those boxes are checked, MA steps in to help pay whatever remains after the resident's own contribution is calculated.

Getting to that level-of-care determination has its own Minnesota-specific process and timeline. DHS requires a Long-Term Care Consultation completed within 60 days before facility entry, or alternatively a preadmission screening, either of which must find that the person needs nursing-home level of care. This consultation isn't purely a financial gatekeeping step — it also helps families explore community-based alternatives and plan an eventual transition out of a facility if that becomes possible.
