# Minnesota Medicaid Long-Term Care

Last updated 2026-10-20

Minnesota's Medicaid program goes by the name Medical Assistance, shortened almost everywhere to MA. The state's Department of Human Services (DHS) frames MA broadly as coverage for lower-income residents, but stresses that the income and asset tests differ by eligibility category — meaning a general MA screening tells you very little about whether someone qualifies specifically for long-term care.

When an older adult needs institutional coverage, the process runs through the county or Tribal office rather than a centralized state desk. For a married applicant, that local office is the one that performs the asset assessment and figures out how much the spouse remaining at home gets to keep. Because so much of the practical work happens at this local level, the exact documents needed and the pace of the process can vary somewhat by county.

The upshot for families: don't assume a generic Medicaid explanation applies. Long-term-care eligibility in Minnesota is a distinct track from ordinary MA, with its own financial rules and its own local point of contact.
