# Massachusetts Medicaid Asset Limits

Last updated 2026-10-20

**Quick answer:** In 2026, MassHealth's asset limit for a community resident age 65 or older is $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a married couple. Which assets count, and the rules for a spouse, are decided separately.

MassHealth's 2026 financial-guidelines page draws a clear line: a community-resident individual age 65 or older can hold no more than $2,000 in countable assets, while a married couple in that same community-resident category is capped at $3,000. The governing regulation, 130 CMR 520.000, repeats those same figures for the coverage categories it applies to.

Those two numbers, though, don't settle an eligibility question on their own. MassHealth still has to sort out which of the applicant's assets count and which don't, whether the person is institutionalized or living in the community, and — where a spouse is involved — what that spouse's own resources look like. A home, a trust, an annuity, a jointly held account, or a recent transfer isn't something you can classify just by glancing at an asset-limit chart; each needs its own look under 130 CMR 520.000.
