# Maryland Medicaid Look-Back Period

Last updated 2026-10-20

Maryland's institutionalized-persons manual sets the disposal look-back at 60 months — five years — for reviewing transfers made before a long-term-care application. That five-year clock is not the same as a separate 30-month period the manual references for situations involving help making an asset inaccessible; the two timeframes serve different purposes, and families shouldn't assume one number covers both.

When a transfer turns up, Maryland caseworkers fill out a dedicated worksheet for each one individually. Certain transfers stop that worksheet cold before any penalty math begins — transfers to a spouse, to a blind or disabled child, to an unmarried child under 21, and certain qualifying home transfers among them. The catch is that the exemption's actual requirements have to be met in full; simply calling a transfer one of these categories isn't enough on its own.
