# Idaho VA Aid & Attendance

Last updated 2026-10-20

VA Aid and Attendance works as an add-on to an eligible veteran's or survivor's monthly VA pension, rather than a stand-alone benefit. The VA lists several paths to qualifying: needing another person's help with daily activities, being substantially bedridden, residing in a nursing home because of a disability-related loss of physical or mental capacity, or meeting the VA's specific visual-impairment threshold.

This benefit isn't handed out automatically just because someone needs long-term care. The VA requires a separate application for Aid and Attendance or Housebound benefits, and because the payment is structured as an addition to pension, the veteran's or survivor's underlying pension eligibility and the supporting medical facts both have to check out first.

Idaho backs this up on the state side with four State Veterans Homes and a property-tax benefit available to qualifying disabled veterans, giving Idaho veterans more than one lever to pull when funding care.
