# District of Columbia VA Aid & Attendance

Last updated 2026-10-20

Aid and Attendance isn't a District-specific benefit — it's a federal add-on that the VA attaches to an existing VA pension for a qualifying veteran or their surviving spouse. According to the VA, a pension recipient can qualify for this additional monthly payment if they need another person's help with daily activities like bathing, feeding, or dressing; if they're bedridden; if they're in a nursing home due to a disabling mental or physical condition; or if they meet specific visual-impairment criteria. One important rule to know: Aid and Attendance and Housebound benefits can't be received at the same time — it's one or the other, not both.

The application paperwork differs depending on the situation. Veterans applying from a nursing home are directed to VA Form 21-0779, while those applying by mail generally use VA Form 21-2680, which requires a medical examiner to complete part of the form. Because the actual benefit amount depends on the veteran's current pension rate and their income as calculated for VA purposes, there isn't a single dollar figure that applies across the board — checking the VA's live pension-rate page and the individual's own award letter is the only reliable way to build an accurate care budget.
