# California Nursing Home Medi-Cal

Last updated 2026-10-20

In California, nursing-facility care is delivered as a Medi-Cal managed-care benefit under the statewide CalAIM carve-in. Once a resident clears both the financial and medical eligibility bars, they may owe a monthly share of cost directly to the facility, with Medi-Cal picking up the rest of the covered amount (DHCS, CalAIM Long-Term Care Carve-In; CANHR, Overview of Medi-Cal for Long Term Care).

This is structurally different from Florida's approach: California doesn't use anything like Florida's $2,982-a-month institutional income cap. Instead, income is generally applied through the share-of-cost calculation after allowable deductions are taken out (CANHR, Overview of Medi-Cal for Long Term Care).

## California figures

- Florida institutional income cap (for comparison): $2,982/month
