# Alaska Long-Term Care Insurance

Last updated 2026-10-20

Alaska's Division of Insurance, part of the Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development, regulates long-term-care insurance sold in the state, with the governing rules found in 3 AAC 28. That regulatory structure is separate from Medicaid eligibility entirely, so any specific policy question should go to the Division and the insurer directly rather than being answered by Medicaid guidance.

For policies issued in Alaska on or after January 1, 2023, 3 AAC 28.580 requires insurers to offer policyholders a right to reduce coverage and premium in at least one prescribed way. The same regulation also requires insurers to send an approaching-lapse reminder describing that right, along with specific disclosure content whenever a premium increase is proposed. Current consumer references identify Alaska as a non-Partnership state, meaning it sits outside the dollar-for-dollar Medicaid asset-protection framework some other states offer alongside qualifying LTC policies.

## Does Alaska have a Long-Term Care Partnership program?

**No.** Alaska doesn't currently have an active Long-Term Care Partnership program open to buyers, and it isn't part of the Partnership reciprocity network. A Partnership policy bought in another state won't receive Partnership asset protection when you apply for Medicaid in Alaska.

That doesn't make long-term care insurance less useful. A policy still pays the benefits it promises, which can preserve savings and delay or avoid the need for Medicaid. Check current rules with the Alaska insurance regulator listed below.
