# Alabama Nursing Home Medicaid

Last updated 2026-10-20

Alabama refers to this coverage as Nursing Home or Institutional Medicaid. Per the Agency's 2026 handout, an individual eligible under this institutional program faces an income limit of $2,982 per month and a resource limit of $2,000, both measured as of the first of the month — though financial eligibility is only one piece of a larger review.

The state's public long-term-care-facility materials note that Medicaid patients qualify based on patient assessments and individualized plans of care, requiring them to meet medical, financial, and other criteria together. Separately, Alabama's OBRA PASRR office screens applicants and current residents of Medicaid-certified nursing facilities for suspected serious mental illness or intellectual disability, evaluating whether an appropriate alternative placement is needed when either diagnosis is present.

Once admitted, a resident keeps a personal-needs allowance of $30 per month.
