# Florida Nursing Home Costs: $146,000 a Year and Rising

Florida's nursing home costs are higher than the national median. Here's what the latest numbers mean for a family's plan.

## Key points

- Florida: $146,000 a year for a private nursing home room and $124,100 for semi-private (CareScout 2025) (CareScout).
- Nationally: $129,575 private and $114,975 semi-private (CareScout).
- In 2025, $250,000 covered only about 2.8 years of care, down from 3.8 years in 2020 (Forbes Advisor).
- Medicare doesn't pay for long-term custodial care (Medicare.gov).

You can't plan for a cost you've never looked up. Florida's latest numbers from the CareScout 2025 Cost of Care Survey are a good place to start, and they're higher than most people expect.

## The Florida numbers

| Care type | Florida median, 2025 | National median, 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Nursing home, private room | $146,000 a year | $129,575 a year |
| Nursing home, semi-private room | $124,100 a year | $114,975 a year |

## How long savings last

In 2025, $250,000 in savings covered only about 2.8 years of care, down from 3.8 years in 2020 (Forbes Advisor). At Florida's private-room median, the same $250,000 would last about 20 months.

Compare that with the average need: women need care for 3.7 years on average and men for 2.2 (ACL). For many families, savings alone run out before the need does.

## What doesn't pay

Medicare.gov is clear that Medicare doesn't pay for long-term custodial care, the everyday help that makes up most nursing home stays. Medicaid does pay for nursing home care, but in Florida a single applicant generally must have no more than $2,000 in countable assets to qualify.

## What a plan looks like

The purpose of long-term care insurance is to turn a five- or six-figure annual cost into a fixed premium, ideally locked in while you're healthy. Three ways to do it:

- Traditional long-term care insurance: usually the most coverage for each premium dollar.
- Hybrid life/LTC: pays for care, or a death benefit if care is never needed.
- Annuity care: repositions existing savings into a larger pool for care, often with simpler underwriting.

In Florida, you also have 30 days after delivery to review a new long-term care policy and return it for a full refund (Florida DFS).
